New EU-funded Research Project

Our project proposal "Automatic Online-Service to Generate Patient-Individual 3D Models to Support Therapy Decisions" was accepted for funding by the European Union and the state of Saxony-Anhalt with money from the European Fund for Regional Development.

Within the next three years, we will investigate methods for the preparation of patient-individual 3D models of the prostate. In co-operation with the company Dornheim Medical Images GmbH and the Clinic for Urology and Pediatric Urology at University Hospital Magdeburg, an automated online service will be developed. In this context, the Computer-Assisted Surgery group investigates techniques for improved image segmentation and human-computer interaction.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and the second most common cause of death from cancer worldwide. If the disease is detected early, the chances of recovery are good. Physicians and patients can choose from many different therapeutic options (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, proton therapy, focused ultrasound, etc.). To support medical decisions for prostate therapy, patient-individual 3D models could play an important role in the future.

The new research project is part of the Forschungscampus STIMULATE at Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg.
